No Zaakpay, Burma or Rogues – but some Contemporary Rugs

We recently wrote about some exciting enhancements to our website payment gateway. Well after a week of development and test payments we were ready to go live, when back came HDFC Bank to reject our application. Apparently most of our products fall into their “Non Target Profile”. This from the same bank that have provided all our business banking since we started, all our personal banking, our credit card facilities, and offered us an overdraft for financing. This despite us being an existing e-commerce operation with a history of sales that are going through one of HDFC’s competitors currently, and for which we wanted to give them the business! Unfortunately Zaakpay weren’t able to provide us a contact at HDFC to discuss this with, so short of escalating it to HDFC senior management ourselves it seems this will be destined for yet another chapter in Nisha’s planned book on the hurdles that the “system”/government places in the way of small businesses in India. :-(

This time it’s Mike writing, whilst Nisha is in Burma. Oops, for various reasons travel plans there have had to be put on hold. Not sure where the next stop for Nisha will be: feel free to send us some suggestions!

On a much more positive note, we’ve been wowing over the suzanis obtained from Nisha’s last Uzbek trip. Anaheeta has been busy doing up her living room with stunning suzani-based interiors, whilst we have more in store and will be showing some prized pieces when we get to Mumbai next month. More on suzanis will follow as a separate blog post…

And equally positively on a personal note, we managed to come to a settlement with our rogue builder. The dream home will have to remain just a dream, but at least we managed to get our money back – something that looked quite unlikely for a while.

Now, while you watch this space for some scintillating suzanis… here are some of the contemporary rugs that have just arrived and are on show in our studio at Nandi Durga Road.

Shame it won’t fit with the suzani look but a tribal carpet might! Getting some stunning Anatolian kilims in the next few weeks and will keep you posted.

The grey brown is one of my favourites! That particular one is 6×9 and the nickel one is 4×6. They are both from Jaipur Rugs Company. Will email pictures and prices (will be available online in a couple of days).

That particular piece we sold, but I’ll check about current availability and get back to you shortly.

  • Welcome to Arastan

Arastan was an online store that curated rare and handpicked treasures from exotic bazaars along the ancient silk route. Unfortunately we ceased trading in early 2014.

You can read about the reasons for closure.

You can still browse some of the products we used to have via the category links above, although none of these are available for purchase.
