We never found that person.

And so we close. Our last day for trading will be 31 January 2014 and everything we have in-store and online must go. Prices have been marked down to reflect this and there is many a bargain to be had.

The vision was to expand sourcing …

Myth and Design – an illustrated talk by Central Asian carpet and textile expert Thomas Cole

Myth and Design

We are pleased to invite you to an illustrated talk in Bangalore by internationally acclaimed Central Asian carpet and textile expert Thomas Cole. Tom lived in Asia for sixteen years between 1970 and 1990. Through his long involvement with the tribal culture in Afghanistan prior to the wars there, and subsequent visits to Kabul, Istanbul and Ashgabat (Turkmenistan), he has learned much about the people and the long history of their weaving traditions. The talk is part of our mission to share not just the crafts but the historical and cultural linkages that go with them.

Myth and Design will identify pervasive myths at the core of our very existence as human beings as illustrated in patterns and symbols spanning the breadth of the Asian continent. It is important to connect with the past in order to enjoy the present with a grounded perspective. As it was once said, ‘We …

Spotlight: Central Asia – Arastan returns to Mumbai

Tibetan Carpet

After the great welcome we received in Mumbai earlier this year, we are back with a new treasure chest of handpicked décor items from Central Asia. We will be exhibiting at ARTISANS’, Kala Ghoda from 20th to 22nd September between 11 am and 7 pm. Highlights include vintage carpets from East Turkestan (now the Xinjiang Uyghur Region of China) and Tibet, thangkas and jewellery from Nepal, miniatures and ikat from Uzbekistan and limited edition furniture incorporating striking Central Asian fabrics created especially for us by designer Pragati Toshniwal.

Rugs from the oasis city of Khotan (now Hotan) are particular favourites of Nishas. Khotan lies on a branch of the Silk Route that headed south from Kashgar to skirt the Taklamakan Desert. This remote region of western China, ringed by mountains and desert, vaunts a millennial tradition of tribal carpet weaving. Wool-on-cotton Khotan rugs are characterised by a blend of Persian and Chinese motifs, a testament to …
